How to excel in this learning journey
This program is truly a learning journey where the return you reap is based on the effort you put in. As in all journeys, everyone starts with different knowledge, skills, and abilities. What you have as a tool set coming into this journey is what you should have. Each of you will end the program with different knowledge, skills, and abilities as well. What matters is that you put effort into the journey and through that effort, you will build professional capabilities and capacities.
You will gain so much with just a little bit of time invested per week. I would like to offer some ideas that may help all of us get the most out of the program. There are two major components to the program. Participating successfully in these two components will help make this a fun and rewarding experience.
If you would like to brush up on your time management for this 10 week course,
please use read the time
management outline and use the attached
time management
worksheet. You will note that in module seven, we will be studying the
concepts behind time management in depth. I wanted to give you some tools to
start this journey if you are new to college level study habits and time
management.
Self-directed learning is a major
piece of this program. This program is
self-directed because you will log onto this web site every week and get your
assignments and complete those assignments on your own. No one is going to be
calling you and telling you to do your work. You are self-directed. Most of your
self-study will involve three components:
You will read articles that provide you with diverse points of view on a topic. These can be printed off of this site or you can read them online.
- I recommend that you read with a highlighter if you have not done this type of work before.
- Highlight those thoughts and passages that seem to stick out for you. If/when you have to use the article as a reference, you will not have to reread it.
- If you like to take notes, please do so.
- Please do not wait until the last day to do your reading. Don't rush yourself. I would estimate 1 to 3 hours of reading per week.
You may be asked to do some writing every other week. This can be as long or short as you wish. Your payoff in learning will be in proportion to your effort. Why writing?
- Improving our writing skills is certainly one reason.
- The other is that we learn by applying what we have explored in our reading.
- You will be asked how to apply what you have read to your work, the real world.
Giving yourself time to reflect is critical. We learn by looking at different points of view, thinking about what we have seen, and then forming our own point of view.
Group learning or collaboration
is the other major theme of this program. Every other week, we will come together
and participate in fun activities to help us learn from each other and from
ourselves. We will work together to learn together. My responsibility
is to insure that I create a workshop that is challenging, fun,
stretches all of us, and helps us be great coaches. Each workshop is scheduled for
four hours.
