What is a discussion group?

An online discussion forum is the same as a physical group of people sitting together having a discussion. i.e. someone in the group poses a question, makes a statement or comment and others in the group respond.

The discussion forum for this program is web based (i.e. can be viewed in a web browser) and the group comprises all learners in the program and the facilitator.

A few ways the online discussion forum differs from a physical group are:
  1. The group can be active 24 hours a day. The group only disbands at the end of session.
  2. Response to questions or comments can be delayed. While you may get a response within 10 minutes, it make also take days. You may get no response if you ask a silly question.
  3. All conversations are recorded. A person can enter a discussion at any time, pick up the thread of conversation and contribute.
A few ways the online discussion forum is the same as a physical group are:
  1. Real people. Only you can't see them.
  2. Watch your P's & Q's. The same as if you were saying something in front of all of the learners and the facilitator.
  3. Multiple discussions at any one time. You can select any discussion topic of your interest and contribute to it.
  4. Start your own discussion. Pose a question or make a statement on a topic of your interest.
The discussion forum for this subject allows students and facilitator to:

What are the definitions of the terms?

Self-study learning assignments:

The assignments are posted on this site and you will print off the reading materials and study at your own pace over the two weeks prior to the next workshop.

Group learning workshops:

This is a four hour facilitated workshop every other week where you will meet together to participate in exercises and conversations to explore the materials studied during the prior two weeks. Some homework may be assigned at the end of each workshop.

Collaboration:

This is where you will learn in a group setting and each of you will contribute to the learning of the each other in the workshop.

Learning:

This is a discovery process for you not simply the regurgitation of data presented to you. Learning usually involves experience in the form of application, simulation, or conversation.

Notices:

If the instructor wishes to provide one way information for you, this will be posted on the notices board. Please watch this board on a regular basis for information, advice, updates, or changes in assignments.

Discussion:

As discussed above, the discussion board is a place for all of us to hold conversations on topics that arise during the program.

Feedback:

If you want to provide feedback of any type, please use this feedback form. I will know if it is urgent or not and I will be able to make adjustments as we go along based on input you provide.
